At least 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and execution of the country's major government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this accident,” affirmed the country's president.

The official reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked pace, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "requires swift accountability."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been running in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
