Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists note that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts suggest the way of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced a switch activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural support.
